Short Answer
Every medical practice is required to reserve time for "Akutsprechstunde" to treat patients with immediate symptoms.
You do not need to wait weeks for an appointment if you are currently suffering from an illness.
What Most Expats Don't Realize
You accepted a "next available" appointment for two weeks away despite having a high fever and a cough. You stayed in bed getting worse and eventually drove to a private clinic out of desperation and paid €150 on the spot for a basic consultation. You lost a significant portion of your weekly budget because you didn't use the correct terminology to get a same-day slot at your local public clinic.
What To Do
- Call the clinic exactly at 8:00 am when the phone lines open.
- Show up at the door the moment they open if you cannot get through by phone.
- "Ich habe akute Beschwerden und brauche eine Akutsprechstunde." (I have acute symptoms and need an emergency slot.) Say this to the receptionist to bypass the standard calendar.
The Truth
The system differentiates between "routine" and "acute" care. If you don't explicitly state that your symptoms are acute, the receptionist will default you to the standard, weeks-long waiting list.
