Short Answer
A referral is valid only until the last day of the calendar quarter in which it was issued.
After March, June, September, or December ends, your referral paper becomes legally worthless for billing.
What Most Expats Don't Realize
You got a referral in December and booked a specialist for January. At the desk, the receptionist said, "This is expired. Get a new one." You went back to your GP, waited hours for a reissue, and lost half a day — all because you didn't know what "Quartal" meant.
What To Do
- Check the issue date in the top right corner of your referral the moment you receive it.
- If your appointment crosses March, June, September, or December, ask your GP to renew it just before the appointment date.
- "Meine Überweisung ist aus dem letzten Quartal, brauche ich eine neue?" (My referral is from the last quarter, do I need a new one?) Ask this at the specialist's reception to avoid being turned away.
The Truth
Germany's medical billing resets every three months. Any document loses its validity the instant it crosses that calendar boundary.
