Short Answer

Dental clinics reserve specific time slots for "Schmerzpatienten" (patients in pain) that do not appear on online booking platforms.

You must communicate the severity of your symptoms via telephone to bypass the standard multi-week waiting list.

What Most Expats Don't Realize

You checked Doctolib for a broken tooth and found no available appointments for twenty days. You waited until the pain became unbearable, eventually visiting an emergency clinic that charged a "Nachtzuschlag" (night surcharge) of €50 plus immediate treatment costs. You lost a significant amount of money and suffered through three days of agony because you didn't know that calling a local clinic at 8:00 am and claiming "starke Schmerzen" would have secured a same-day slot.

What To Do

  • Call at least five local dental clinics the moment they open their phone lines.
  • State clearly that you have "acute pain" and need a "Notfalltermin" today.
  • "Ich habe starke Zahnschmerzen und brauche einen Notfalltermin." (I have severe tooth pain and need an emergency appointment.) — say this to the receptionist to be squeezed into the daily schedule.

The Truth

The system is legally obligated to treat acute pain, but it is not obligated to offer you an appointment unless you use the correct terminology. If you simply ask for a "regular check-up" for a broken tooth, you will be pushed to the end of the queue.
