An FSJ (Freiwilliges Soziales Jahr) is a voluntary social year. Students work in hospitals, schools, or NGOs for a small stipend before starting university.

FSJの期間は「待機セメスター（Wartesemester）」としてカウントされるため、入学定員制限（Numerus Clausus）が厳しい医学部などの出願要件において有利に働く制度上のメリットがある。ただし、支給される手当（Taschengeld）は生活費を賄うには不十分な金額に設定されている。
