I lost the school locker key. Why am I being asked for €500?

Many schools use Schließanlagensysteme (master key systems). If you lose one key, the entire building's security is compromised and all locks must be changed.

Tips

Always include key loss (Schlüsselverlust) in your Haftpflichtversicherung (private liability insurance). It costs almost nothing but saves you thousands.
